Product-Led Acquisition: A Reason For Players to Choose You After the Bonus Ends

Product-Led Acquisition: A Reason For Players to Choose You After the Bonus Ends

A welcome offer can get a player to register. Giving them a reason to come back is where the harder work begins.

For sportsbook and casino marketers, I think those two goals need to be considered together. If a bonus is the main reason someone chooses your site, what keeps them there once it’s been used? And what happens when another operator puts a better offer in front of them?

I believe this is why product-led acquisition is becoming a playbook worth following across iGaming. The experience itself needs to do more of the work of attracting players, converting their interest, and earning their return.

Give players something specific to choose

By product-led acquisition, I mean making a distinctive product experience a central reason someone chooses an operator.

That might be a sports betting format that makes markets easier to understand, exclusive casino content, a better live dealer experience, or a more useful way to discover games.

When a campaign leads with an offer, the player evaluates the offer. When it leads with an experience, the player has another basis for choosing the brand.

I think we all understand that bonuses are never going away. Neither are affiliates, sponsorships, and paid media campaigns. But those channels have more to work with when they can communicate something distinctive beyond the size of the incentive.

We have already seen this with crash games such as Aviator. In October 2023, Light & Wonder reported more than 10 million monthly active users and described the game as attracting a previously untapped player demographic.

Pack rips offer another potential entry point, drawing on the appeal of collecting and revealing cards. Their value as an operator acquisition tool still needs testing, but the principle remains, which is giving players an experience they want to seek out.

The product gives marketing a story that can survive beyond the promotion’s expiry date.

    The limits of promotion-led growth

Bonuses can generate an immediate response. The problem comes when operators depend on them to generate the next response, and the one after that.

The operator pays to acquire the player, funds the welcome incentive, and then spends again to encourage their return. If the player only remains active while those incentives continue, the acquisition cost never tells the full story.

An attractive cost per FTD can therefore hide a weak business outcome. The campaign looks efficient, but promotional expenses keep reducing the value of the customers it brings in.

Competing primarily on incentives also creates a proposition that is easy to challenge. Another operator can offer a larger bonus, more free spins, or a more attractive promotion. Each response puts further pressure on the economics without necessarily building preference for the brand.

That is what makes ongoing dependence on bonuses difficult to sustain. Promotional activity has to produce enough incremental value to justify its cost. Activity that disappears as soon as the incentive ends is a fragile foundation for growth.

A strong product gives promotions a more productive role. An offer can encourage someone to discover an experience, while the experience provides a reason to return after the offer is gone.

    Registration is only the beginning

Acquisition performance depends on what happens after the click.

An online experiment involving 2,034 UK frequent gamblers reported that 57% had used at least five operators in the previous six months. That finding concerns a specific sample, but it illustrates how little an account registration alone tells us about preference.

Product-led acquisition connects the initial promise to the subsequent experience. The campaign gives someone a specific reason to visit, the first session demonstrates it, and the product earns its place among their choices.

This also changes how marketers should think about efficiency. A cheaper CAC is only an advantage if the resulting customer economics support it.

Product is already part of the growth strategy

Major operators already place product quality at the centre of their competitive strategies.

Flutter reported $991 million in technology research and development investment in fiscal 2025, describing that investment as central to its competitive positioning. Entain’s 2025 annual report similarly links acquiring and retaining players to entertaining products and engaging experiences.

Those disclosures do not prove that a particular feature lowers acquisition costs, but what they do show is that product and marketing belong in the same growth conversation.

    Make the difference visible

For sportsbooks, differentiation can begin with accessibility. An experienced bettor may value extensive markets and sophisticated tools. A casual sports fan may need understandable selections, useful context, and a clearer connection to the match they are watching.

Familiar interactions, including cards or themed collections, can make discovery easier while keeping odds, stakes, and potential outcomes clear.

Casino operators face a related challenge. A large catalogue provides choice, but players still need to find something relevant within it. Exclusive content, thoughtful curation, and a recognisable live casino experience can help turn that catalogue into a reason to choose the operator.

In both cases, the difference needs to be visible before registration and easy to find afterwards. A feature buried several screens deep has limited value as an acquisition proposition.

Product-led acquisition gives operators a stronger foundation for growth by providing an experience that attracts interest, delivers on the marketing promise, and gives players a reason to return. As dependence on incentives becomes harder to sustain, building products people actively choose will become an increasingly important part of the acquisition playbook.
