The analysis covers Google Trends data from August 2021 through February 2026 across roughly 200 US metropolitan areas, comparing the crisis term "gambling addiction" against the prevention term "gambling helpline." The two terms map onto two different Americas.

What the data suggests

The pattern points to a mechanism. In regulated markets the law puts the helpline number on every ad, app screen and promotional email, and the search data indicates the repetition works. People in Cincinnati and Boston were not searching for gambling helplines in 2022. They started within months of their states launching regulated online betting with disclosures attached. Texans in Beaumont and Abilene, meanwhile, gamble through offshore casinos and sweepstakes apps that carry no disclosures, no deposit limits and no self-exclusion tools. Their search behavior skips prevention entirely and surfaces only at the point of crisis.

Wyoming sharpens the finding. The state legalized online sports betting, yet Cheyenne still ranks fifth nationally for "gambling addiction" searches and shows no measurable helpline volume. Legality alone did not produce the awareness effect seen in Ohio, Michigan or North Carolina, which suggests the consumer protection benefit comes from the regulatory apparatus and its enforced disclosures, not from the act of legalizing itself. Notably, the effect does not require online casinos. Ohio, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Florida have regulated sports betting only, yet their metros dominate the helpline rankings alongside Michigan's two iGaming metros.
